Romans 1: 16- 23 reads, "For I'm not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Gentile. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, ' The just shall live by faith. ' For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were they thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man - and birds, and four-footed animals, and creeping things.

The gospel, meaning the good news of Jesus' death and resurrection, is actually the power of God to save believers from His wrath. Because in the gospel, day by day, week after week, and year after year, God keeps on revealing his righteousness as a gift to be received by faith and for faith; so that those who have their righteousness from God (and not of themselves) will not perish, but have everlasting life. God's wrath upon unrighteousness is being poured out continuously; because that is the nature of God. Yet God's grace keeps giving us opportunities to recognize and accept His message of salvation before it's too late; just as His mercy keeps giving us one more chance to get this: we can't be clean by our own efforts, whether it be our good deeds or intentions. Nor can we hold back God's hand of wrath by trying to impress Him with some fancy words or promises. God's nature is permanent. Ours however is tainted by worldly teachings and shortcuts.

Isaiah 64: 6 explains where we stand with God. It says, "But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away." There is sin and guilt in the heart and life of every human being, both Jew and Gentile. It's always been that way. Though the power of positive thinking may make us look and sound acceptable or politically correct; it can't alter what we really are on the inside. We have to decide, and we have to decide fast. Should God pour out His wrath upon Jesus Christ, our Savior, who is the propitiation for our sinful nature; or are we willing to absorb the entire punishment ourselves? Do we ask Jesus to reside in our hearts forever, therefore stand before the judgment seat of God in lieu of us; or do we give into our ignorance and stubbornness, so we would perish forever? Knowing there's nothing God wouldn't forgive because He made us for eternal fellowship with Himself first and foremost, choosing eternal death over eternal life would be the dumbest thing. This one particular New Year's resolution should outweigh all else!

Well said!  The heart is deceitfully wicked, and the very best we can offer is but filthy rags. I am so thankful for His love, mercy and grace!
